Kid Approved Banana Bread Recipe the Whole Family will Love

In the Kitchen

If you’re looking for a kid approved recipe for banana bread, look no further! This one was tweaked and adjusted by kids, for kids!

There is nothing new, or awe-inspiring, about banana bread. Actually, it’s probably safe to say it’s a staple in the baking rotation in many homes.

What’s special about this one is that it has been tweaked by kids, for kids. So you can count on it having just the right texture to make their little hands come back for more.

As a part of our learning fun we set about testing banana bread recipes, playing with different ideas, adjusting, adding, changing, until they got it just right.

Their two main tips?

Make it bite sized and use silicone bakeware!

After testing out results in various bakeware, their favourite (highly recommended) is Wilton’s heart-shaped silicone mold, as seen below! Apparently, this mold gives the two-bite banana bread the right ratio of outside vs. inside….(which my kids tell me is extremely important!)

We have loved our @playosmo since the second we got it! 👏🏻 When the schools shut down last year I don’t think I could have told more people about how much they needed one 😆⁣
⁣
It supplements our home school curriculum beautifully and gives extra support for our public schooler in a way that makes learning at home so much fun 🤸‍♀️. ⁣
⁣
@playosmo gifted us their new game, Math Wizard and the Magical Workshop, and as their games always do, it bridges learning and play in the most beautiful way✨We are all about playful learning around here and @playosmo encourages learning in the most magical way! 🪄⁣
⁣
Today I walked into the room to find this kiddo cozied up at her desk in the sun ☀ , playing away, making potions 🧪, and shrieking with delight as she worked towards the next stage of the game 💕 Math doesn’t come naturally to her, and it has never been something she opts to do independently, until now! {insert happy mom dance 💃 }⁣
⁣
I love that she got this out independently, not because it’s math time, but just for entertainment because she loves it 😀!! I’m not sure if it’s the wizards, potion-making, animated characters, or all of the above, but I will take it! 🙋🏼‍♀️ ⁣
⁣
I love that this game will grow with her as her skills expand so the curriculum-inspired potion-making 🧪can continue for a long time to come👏🏻 ⁣
⁣
My littlest 👦🏼 who you probably know LOVES his screens, eats this right up too! And you know what?! No mom-guilt here 👏🏻, because he is learning and growing with every moment he spends playing, so it’s all good! 🥰⁣

@playosmo has 13+ games that are geared towards children between 3 and 10 years old. The Math Wizard and the Magical Workshop game is perfect for children aged 6 to 8 (grades 1 or 2) 👏🏻⁣

There is so much more to play than a way to spend time ⏰

We are all aware of the physical benefits of active play ⛹️‍♂️ but what we sometimes overlook are the emotional benefits 💜

I’ve got a “busy” 👦🏼 boy who needs to move like he needs to breathe!

He processes his emotions through movement. Active toys 🛹 let him:

✨express built up or suppressed emotions
✨build coping skills
✨increase body-based awareness
✨take body breaks to help focus
✨ expel physical emotion so he can engage more in conversation

It has been a weird (aka HARD) last year. A recent conversation with our Naturopathic Doctor 👩🏻‍⚕️ reminded me that this kid processes his emotions through movement.

That reminder was definitely needed! 💕

We did some reorganizing and now have an indoor trampoline and active toys like this awesome board (@spoonerboards) nearby throughout the day ☀️. His ability to self-regulate now amazes me💕.

When he’s getting stressed from school, is frustrated with something (usually his sister 👧🏼) or is just feeling sad, he’ll hop on the trampoline or jump on his #spoonerboard and noticeably feel better in minutes 😍

He also wants to be all of the things (snowboarder 🏂, surfer 🏄‍♂️ & skateboarder 🛹) so this training board has been amazing for building confidence, increasing balance, and helping him feel he is on the way to accomplishing his goals 👏🏻

Today, it was the simple wish to make a snow angel, which of course lead to pondering how to get up without undoing his careful work, which lead to better problem solving skills and creativity.

We absolutely love playing in the kitchen. 👩🏼‍🍳

Kids learn so much in the kitchen, from math and science 🧪 to important life skills like problem solving and creativity.

Nothing beats the learning that comes with hands on activities and there’s no better motivation than learning your way to yummy treats! 🙃

We’ve been working out some kinks lately to find what is now our favourite banana 🍌 bread recipe. They’ve been changing things up, adjusting ingredients and baking times, and even playing with bakeware to get the exact texture and taste they want. Today they found it 🥰

We were also working on equivalent fractions as Mama purposefully provided measuring cups that were missing the measurements they needed 😉

Tell me you play Racko 💁🏼‍♀️ We have Tell me you play Racko 💁🏼‍♀️

We have literally spent hours playing this today.

The kids love the strategy aspect, I love the learning disguised in play.

It’s win-win.

If you haven’t played before, it’s a really simple concept, collecting and trading cards in order to hold a rack of sequenced cards. Special runs increase your points, but the first player to have all of their cards from smallest to largest wins - or can take their chances at increasing points before calling Racko!

We sometimes use this during what would be our math period as they learn a lot about number sequence and probability.

What are you family’s favourite games that disguise learning in the fun?!
It’s that time of year again 💁🏼‍♀️ It’s that time of year again 💁🏼‍♀️

Time for fresh starts and putting our best foot forward.

There’s such a beautiful feeling that comes with getting everything out of the house that really doesn’t need to be there...I think it’s called relaxation 😘

But I’m all seriousness, it really does support wellness ~ both emotionally and physically. (Did you know it is actually linked to healthier food choices like less snacking?!)

It’s also an awesome way to teach positive life choices and involve kids in family responsibilities and rituals. 🥰

My favourite part? It creates more time in our lives to spend with those we love 💕

There’s no better time than now (and when we are all spending more time at home.)

New post up on the blog, including free printables 👏

My kids LOVE the kids checklist (have I mentioned they think they are super independent 😂)

Do you have a little gamer? 🎮 (Link for MarioK Do you have a little gamer? 🎮

I used to worry a lot about video games, but I don’t anymore.

In fact, I now embrace his love of gaming and whole heartedly support it - because he is growing and expanding so much with them.

He is learning team work, patience, commitment, problem solving, strategizing, money management and is even growing by way of emotional regulation.

Through lock downs he’s stayed connected to friends and family through online play and family game nights have been taken to a whole new place sometimes!

This little one has dreams of becoming an engineer and creating games and he is eager to learn any and all skills that help him achieve those dreams.

He has also helped me to open my mind, shift my thinking and embrace the unexpected good in something I was, at one point, firmly against.

Video games have been a perfect example of why I choose free play, why I choose playful learning, and the importance of not setting limits simply for the sake of setting them.

I’ll be forever thankful for the fun and the growth he’s accomplished because of the imaginative worlds he’s become absorbed in through his games.

In this picture he’s playing MarioKart Live Home Circut from @nintendo.

This has brought him SO MUCH joy. Oddly enough, he’s also bonded with his great grandmother in a new way as he playfully torments her with it 🤦🏼‍♀️

Tell me how your kids have expanded your thinking?! 👇🏻

We are in need of some packing snow! ☃️

We are absolutely in love with this Igloo from @playsnowigloostructures 🥰

If it hadn’t been rainy up until today I would have had a really hard time waiting on Christmas to give this to the kids 💁🏼‍♀️

This comes in pieces that very easily snap together. When you cover it with packing snow the frame is hidden and you have a very special, and very fun, Igloo structure. How amazing is that?!

You can buy additional Igloos and tunnels to attach them together and my kids are already wishing for additions to make themselves an Igloo “city” 🤞🏻💁🏼‍♀️

We are bundled up, enjoying the beautiful snowy day, now we just need the right snow to get our Igloo play on!!

Quiet time never felt so good… Quiet moments ha Quiet time never felt so good...

Quiet moments have definitely changed over the last few months. It used to be they’d only come with naps, then only when kids were playing with friends outside, and now, somewhat miraculously, it comes when they entertain themselves.

I always have a to-do list. ALWAYS. I mean, I’m a mom 💁🏼‍♀️

But lately I’ve been working really hard to use quiet moments for things that are more important than that list.

Today my list was a mile long, but rather then tackle it I embraced the quiet time by first just sitting and staring at a wall (holiday exhaustion creeping in 🤣), then by just watching this amazing little person as she worked away on her puzzle, and then by joining her in front of the fire.

We always complete a @ravensburgerglobal puzzle over the holidays together, but this year she has branched off on her own. She fancies herself all sorts of independent now 🤦🏼‍♀️ but lucky for me she’s a #mamasgirl and still lets me join 🥰

I love that these months have allowed for some slower times and some shifts in how we do things. I’m a tad less productive, but much more relaxed!

I also loved that she’s learned to embrace puzzles as a way to to have quiet time and relax herself 🥰

How do you spend your quiet moments when the kids are otherwise occupied? Do you tackle your list? Exercise? Relax yourself?!

My kids are such good reminders...

We really don’t need to make things complicated 💁🏼‍♀️They are happy with the most simple things, as long as we are spending time together.

They’ve had the time of their lives this weekend baking, mostly just with melted chocolate!

We got a new #wiltoncakes chocolate melting pot this month which has turned out to be a dream come true (I’ll share in stories later!) and the kids have spent their days making all sorts of treats 🥰

I love so much about this, especially their growing confidence in the kitchen and how much they are learning by experimenting 💕

This mornings creation is their creation...their version of festive chocolate bark.

Our new pot lets us melt (and warm) two chocolates at once, so they’ve done milk chocolate and white chocolate at the same time and now consider themselves to be pros 😂

The kids instructions...
1. Melt both chocolates
2. Add peppermint to white chocolate (optional)
3. Once they are melted pour them side by side onto parchment paper
4. Use a butter knife or spoon handle to swirl them through one another
5. Top with choice of festive sprinkles
Note: you could add crushed candy cane to the top instead of sprinkles and not add peppermint to the chocolate

Tell me…do your kids believe? I feel like I’ Tell me...do your kids believe?

I feel like I’m in a tricky spot as my youngest started questioning last year (soooo little 😥) but my oldest still believes.

This has created a weird shift in dynamics.

I have always envisioned taking my oldest out for a hot chocolate to talk about the spirit of Christmas when she stopped believing and engage her in keeping that magic of Santa alive for her little brother.

Now that the tables have turned on me, and it’s the littlest who has stopped believing, I’m not sure what my next step is!

This year he is holding on because he WANTS to believe but I’m certain it won’t hold on beyond this year.

He saved his allowance and bought a security indoor camera to try and catch Santa to prove to himself he is real 🤦‍♀️

Have any of you had a younger child stop believing first? And if you have, do you have any tips/suggestions?!

⁣

We have been relishing in our slow time together at home and have been doing so much baking.

The kids have been loving having baking/decorating competitions...but I’m running out of items to compete over!

Ideas?! 👇🏻

Today, it was the simple wish to make a snow angel, which of course lead to pondering how to get up without undoing his careful work, which lead to better problem solving skills and creativity.

He doesn’t see his learning, but I do 💕

This is the most beautiful tribute to little boys everywhere. It perfectly embodies so many of the lessons that my Mama heart wants to impart on my sweet (& wild) boy.

We always give books, inscribed with hand written love notes from Mom & Dad for Valentine’s Day, rather than a card. This year Dear Boy & Dear Girl will be given to my little crew 💕
